Dover has had its fair share of 'Wild Weather' being located on the English Channel the busiest shipping lanes in the world this can be hazardous to the local ferries leaving and returning to the port. From the 1987 hurricane in October of that year to Hurricane Lilly in 1996 Dover has been hit hard several times by the force of nature. There has also been more calming times when the weather has reached scorching conditions as recently 2006 has seen the warmest September since records began in the South East of England. Dover has been hit by stormy conditions including flash floods in July 2004 and icy conditions in the 1950's when the sea froze over north of Herne Bay. On other pages on the Dover Soul site we have pictures of snow, and related weather conditions.

Saturday October 21st 2006 - Stormy Dover

Today there was a magnificent storm over Dover and into the channel. The weather was violent with windows taking a battering and thunder and lightning causing some electrical problems in various areas including Whitfield for example. The storm was intensifying as seen by the photograph above sent in by Ray Goodfellow of http://www.doverferryphotos.co.uk/ . This majestic shot with its interesting purple lightning fork set against a gorgeous blue sky shows the immense power of the force of nature with the historic scene of Dover Castle sitting precariously behind in the distance.

A magnificent and interesting photograph showing that Ray Goodfellow is a master of the lens.
